The Difference Between Employees and Entrepreneurs
The truth is that some people are not cut out to be entrepreneurs. But, what makes an entrepreneur? Here are some important, though sometimes subtle, differences between employees and entrepreneurs:
An employee is perfectly content working for a set wage and comfortable knowing exactly what is expected of them to get said wage. An entrepreneur wants to know faster and more efficient ways to make money and doesn’t like the idea of their salary being capped by a boss. Instead, an entrepreneur will look for new and innovative ways to boost their annual income even if it means doing things that aren’t in a specified job description.
An employee only does what they are told and is unlikely to do more tasks than those assigned to them because, hey, “that’s not my job!” An entrepreneur will do more tasks than they need to do and is likely to have a difficult time not thinking about work. For the entrepreneur work is almost like a drug and because they love what they are doing so much they can’t get enough. Then again, if they stop liking what they are doing they will probably come up with something new to do and/or outsource the things they don’t enjoy. Sadly, the employee can’t outsource the things they don’t like to do and because of this they may start feeling trapped and even resentful of where they work.
The entrepreneur can work on their own schedule and create a system that allows them to take time off whenever they feel it’s necessary. The employee has a set schedule, has to ask permission for time off and is stuck if their boss doesn’t approve the request leaving them no choice but to call in sick thereby docking their pay.
There is one thing that employees have over entrepreneurs, however. They earn a steady paycheck and know exactly when they will be paid. Even with that steady check though, I don’t know any entrepreneur who could settle for being an employee.
