What Sets you Apart from your Competitors?
Whether you like to admit it or not, you have competitors regardless of what business you are in. You are most likely just one of many in a crowd and at any moment, even if you don’t realize it, you could lose a client or potential client to those competitors. How do you combat against it? Well, it’s time to dive deep into your competitors’ businesses and figure out what it is that sets you apart from them.
– Do they offer what you offer? Let’s say you’re a photographer and you want to learn about your competitors. What is the first thing you will likely do? You’ll look them up online and see about their services available. Perhaps you offer something they don’t. For example, they only do weddings, but you do parties and family portraits. Whatever is different, take note of it!
– Do they charge more than you? Sometimes this isn’t a fair question as many new and not so confident business owners will undercharge for their services, but still it’s a good idea to figure out the competition’s rates and make note of that too.
– How long have they been in business? On most company websites you can find out how long they have been in business from their “about us” section. If not, many business owners will write their opening date in their Facebook milestones.
– Do they have training for what they are offering? Sometimes it helps to just know what certifications/education the competition holds.
– What areas of the community do they serve? If it’s a service based business do they handle their entire state or just a couple of local cities? If they sell products online such as travel packages like I do, can they accommodate multiple states or even international customers?
Once you have done a plethora of research and made several notes on your competitors, now you can see exactly what sets you apart from them and use it to market your business. Getting clear on what sets you apart also helps you get clear on the clients you want to serve. Now it’s time to let those potential clients know who you are! Write blog posts stating what makes you unique and share them, send out press releases telling the world why you’re the best in your field, spread the news of your individuality and hopefully you will draw the exact clients you are looking for.
