Suicide Travel?
In the days since the news broke of Robin Williams death websites and social media have been flooded with details of his suicide. Whether you agree or disagree with his decision to take his own life, the fact remains that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Curiously enough one story that came on our radar in the wake of Robin William’s death is about a travel trend that we never expected- suicide travel. In a post dated August, 22, 2014, Travel and Tour World reported, “Switzerland is famous for a number of reasons but its recent claim to fame is from suicide tourism.” The post went on to say that, “People from the age of 23 to 97 are visiting Switzerland and organising their own death.”
The idea behind these suicide trips is that a person wishing to take their own life with the assistance of a doctor has to travel to a pro-euthanasia location because most countries deem assisted suicide illegal. The post did not indicate whether anyone from the United States has been a part of this trend but it did mention residents from Germany, Britain, Italy and France.
If you or someone you love is thinking about attempting suicide please get help right away by taking one of these actions:
– Call your mental health specialist.
– Call 911 or your local emergency number.
Call a suicide hotline number — in the United States, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor. Use that same number and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.
– Reach out to a close friend or loved one.
– Seek help from your doctor or other health care provider.
– Contact a minister, spiritual leader or someone else in your faith community. (Source)
