My Take on Ebola
Odds are good that you have been hearing a lot about Ebola lately. Even I was interviewed about Ebola recently for 10 News in Tampa Bay, where Elite Travel is headquartered. Did you miss the new clip I was featured in? Check it out here.
With all this talk of Ebola on the news, inundating the consumer with fear, I felt it necessary to give my take on this virus. As I said in the interview, I don’t think it’s likely that a massive worldwide outbreak will occur. However, just because it is unlikely, doesn’t mean organizations should sit idly by waiting for a virus as deadly as this one to have the chance to become an epidemic.
I feel that every person should be screened before traveling. I’m not talking an extensive health check- that would violate privacy! But a simple questionnaire asking things like, “Have you recently been sick or had symptoms of the flu?” or “Do you have a fever?” or “Have you been in contact with anyone that has a virus?” protects the people that a potentially ill person could be traveling amongst.
For example, the woman who was on Thomas Duncan’s medical care team that flew on a plane a day before being diagnosed with Ebola. She had a fever and has been in close contact with the virus! Why on Earth was she cleared to get on a plane?!? She put all of the passengers on that flight at risk for contracted the virus. A questionnaire could have prevented her from getting on that flight.
All the time schools will tell parents that if there child is sick that they should not be sent to school so as not to spread their sickness to other children. Bosses tell employees not to come to work if they are contagious to avoid all of their employees taking sick days. Why should travel be any different? If you are sick, do your fellow travelers a favor and stay home!
Now, I want to hear from you! What do you think about traveling precautions as a result of the Ebola scare?
