Being Bad Mouthed on Social Media
Whether you have been in business a week or two decades, there is always the chance that you will be bad mouthed on social media. How do you handle it?
Don’t ignore it, instead take action! Ignoring it shows your public you don’t care about your reputation. Address it as soon as possible. Reach out to the person and see what caused them to bad mouth you. Then, once you know what happened see what you can do to rectify it.
For example, a restaurant recently had a person complain on their facebook page about a bad meal. Rather than ignoring it, the restaurant immediately posted that they were sorry for the customer had a bad experience and invited them to come back and try another meal on the house.
Had the restaurant simply ignored the post two things would have happened- the customer likely would never be a repeat visitor and everyone who saw the post would have assumed the restaurant couldn’t care less about the quality of service which could lead to more people not wanting to visit.
Unfortunately this may not fix anything. The customer could just have a bad taste in their mouth over your business. At this point you have done all you can do and you may just have to accept the loss of this customer.
What if it’s a competitor? In the event a competitor is bad mouthing your business you could delete the comment, report it to the social media site they posted it on or you could have grounds for legal action. If their reports are false or defamatory you could politely request they remove the comment but if it gets too ugly you might need to contact an attorney and/or threaten the person defaming you that you will be contacting an attorney. Should the trouble persist you might have no choice but to head to court.
Now, it’s your turn to tell us – What do you do when someone bad mouth’s you on social media?
